Betsy Roeback Monsalve '66 tells interviewer Jenn Bokoch Gillett, "Eight years of all women's education was wonderful for me. And I think we had some early feminist leanings. ...we weren't as distracted by male-dominant ideas. The sisters were women of their time, they have become much more "liberated," radical, in recent years than they were at that time. But they were always pretty solid, and they were committed to young women and women's education. And the fact that they had the business track was a practical thing. ...employers all over Erie looked for St. Benedict's girls, and my mother got several wonderful jobs. She was class of 1936, straight out of high school, didn't go to college, and got some great jobs because she was a St. Benedict's girl. So the sisters were certainly advocates for girls and women.
